My name is Nicolas Lyford-Pike

Nicolas Lyford-Pike has been living in Columbus, IN since 1992. He was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, but his family is from Montevideo, Uruguay. Nicolas was born profoundly deaf and was diagnosed with autism when he was two years old. At about that age, he had already taught himself to read and write. His first written words were the names of all the Brazilian states, which he wrote across the walls of his parents bedroom. His fascination with wheels, hubcaps, cars and constellations also started at an early age.  It was quite common for his parents to find him by the apartment living room window looking at the sky in the middle of the night or visit the neighbor's garage to borrow his spare wheels.

Nicolas has a strong visual memory which he uses to re-create the sky, how it would look like, at any time of the year, in different hemispheres.  Nicolas graduated from Columbus East High School in 2003, but was not able to find a job until meeting Paul at Art in the Park in the summer of 2004. They have been working together ever since. Paul realized from the very beginning what an incredible artist he could became if trained, even with the obvious communication barrier that they would have to overcome. Nicolas work has been shown at Art in the Park, a year after meeting Paul there, followed by An Evening of Art (Columbus, IN), IN*SOURCE Conference (Lafayette, IN), VSA in Indianapolis, Art Walk in downtown Columbus (twice), and at Cummins Inc.(Columbus IN).

He is also a member of ArtsWORK Indiana. Both Paul and Nicolas were featured in the Public Television program "Across Indiana", where they were interviewed and shown working at their studio. He has also donated his art work to various auctions, contributing to the community that now recognizes him as an artist. He has two younger sisters, both studying at Indiana University in Bloomington.  He currently lives with his parents in Columbus.
